Jersey Shore's old blocks really are old. The historic district that went on the National Register in 1975 counts 286 contributing buildings, most of them put up between 1830 and 1860, with Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian all represented on the same blocks. A house framed in that era predates anyone thinking about ductwork or a second bathroom, so the work tends to be narrow and slow. Usually it means matching a trim profile nobody stocks, or finding out what the last three owners buried behind the plaster.
The borough sits on the West Branch Susquehanna just east of where Pine Creek comes in, right at the Clinton County line, which makes it a good address and a wet one. Agnes crested at 38.2 feet here in 1972, the 1936 flood ran nearly as high, and in 1889 most of the town went under along with Lock Haven and Williamsport. That history is why people assume water damage here means the river. Plenty of what I actually get called out for started with a supply line or a roof.
A leak almost never shows up where it started. Water gets in at a ridge seam or a vent boot that has gone brittle, runs the underside of a rafter, and stains a ceiling several feet away from the actual hole. So I find the entry point before I touch anything, and I put the ceiling back afterward, insulation through paint, because a fixed roof over a brown stain is a half-finished job. I did exactly that on a metal roof in Loganton this year.

Do you work on the older houses in the middle of town?
Much of the borough's core went up between 1830 and 1860, and that is ordinary work for me. In a house that old I would rather match what is already there than tear out something that has held for a century and a half. I will also tell you where I stop: if something falls outside what I'm registered and qualified to take on, you hear that before I start rather than halfway in.
